Dr. Oded Bergman

Dr. Bergman is an independent microbiology researcher at the Yigal Allon Kinneret Limnological Laboratory, in collaboration with Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Oded’s research interests revolve around microbial biogeochemical processes, with an emphasis on functional genes in the aqueous environment and on aquatic host-pathogen interactions. He gained vast experience and expertise in a variety of advanced molecular methods. Among these, his research focuses on the microbiome of water, biofilm, sediments and of the sediment-water interface.

Oded obtained his MSc in marine biotechnology, from Tel Aviv University in 2010.  His thesis was devoted to marine aquaculture of sponges and isolation of their associated bacteria as first steps in accumulation of bioactive natural products. Later, he received his PhD in Biochemistry at The Technion in 2017, where his thesis revolved around mitochondrial disfunction in health and disease. Prior to becoming an independent researcher, Oded completed two post-doctoral positions at the Yigal Allon Kinneret Limnological Laboratory. His first post-doc focused on the human waterborne pathogen Legionella spp. and its interactions with potential host in water and biofilm and samples. His second post-doc revolved around functional genes (e.g., Nitrification, Denitrification, Sulphur oxidation, ANAMMOX, methanogenesis and methane oxidation). Throughout his professional career, he has served as head teaching assistant and head lecturer in a variety of courses.  Today Oded is part of the academic staff of the MSc program in Water Industry Engineering at Kinneret Academic College.
